Talabat.com held a seminar at the Institute of Industrial Engineers on the 30th of March. The seminar started with a distribution of stress balls and pens branded with Talabat’s logo, followed by a speech by Mr. Mohammed Jaffar, Talabat’s former owner and CEO, who proudly shared his journey since his childhood down to his entrepreneurial achievements.
He briefly described the first stages of his life and how he grew up and studied in London since the age of 12, before he got graduated from The University of Surrey with a degree in Economics. He kick-started his career in Gulf Bank's credit department in 2004 where he worked for 4 years. This experience sharpened his knowledge of banking, loans and the structures and strategies of companies and traders. He shifted later on to work on opening his own business, The Kitchen restaurant, in which he applied to Talabat and joined as a participant hoping to improve the sales. He then started noticing the sales increase from KD 40 to KD 450 per day. This opportunity made him realize the potential in owning 6alabat.com and started pursuing the company owners for further negotiations planning to acquire it. After six months of tough negotiations, the acquisition was signed in 2010. Mr. Jaffar later changed 6alabat’s domain and brand name becoming Talabat to officially operate across the GCC countries. He further explained how important it is to develop a team to be fully dedicated on achieving the level of success that Talabat has reached and stressed on the importance of having qualified and ambitious employees to take the company to such a level.
Due to the efforts and work efficiency that Talabat's management and employees’ have, Talabat has evolved from a local online food ordering service to a leading e-commerce company in the Arab World. Talabat now has more than 22,000 daily orders versus 700 orders in the period when it was first bought in 2010. In 2014, Talabat was acquired by the German company “Rocket Internet” for an amount of $170 million. After a short period of time, another acquisition was made by "Delivery Hero", the company that is dedicated to expand Talabat into the MENA region and further develop the website and mobile app.
The speech was followed with a Q&A sessions giving the students a chance to inquire for further information. The seminar was then concluded with an appreciation award presented from the Institute of Industrial Engineers to Mr. Mohammed Jaffar, who in turn, thanked the event organizers and curators and how he wishes that his story could inspire the students on how to work on becoming real entrepreneurs in the future.
